Get to US Customs. They’re like “You flew half way around the world to do phone banking and put up lawn signs?” And when I said “Yeah”, they were not keen to believe me. Had to give them a phone number for the office I’m working for and he confirmed it and I got through, but I’d missed my flight by then.

To be fair to Delta, they moved me to another flight and gave me a hotel voucher. So now I’m sitting in a hotel in Detroit waiting to go for a flight to DC where I’m praying the security won’t be quite as interested in my plans.

Fucking hate crises.

I fly out to Virginia to work on the Obama campaign tomorrow, and aside from the frustration of local times for 3 flights messing up my check in, I’m organised.

My bag is packed. My music is downloading. I’ve got all the books I’m likely to need on my Kindle and I’m ready to go and start work.

It’s weird though. I’ve done stuff like this before. I’ve gone to America for work before and I’ve done political campaign work before. But camp is, frankly, just for the fun of it. This is an actual thing, and it’s actually important.

Plus there’s the minor issue of 22 odd hours of travelling with little prospect of a smoke. I’m going to be a moany bastard at immigration.

I’m looking forward to it though. Actually being involved in something as big as this, and in much nicer November weather than in Glasgow, is a kind of once-in-a-lifetime thing.

Right, so obviously it’s great Andy Murray won the US Open and everything, and I stayed up until 3 to watch it and loved it. But I was looking at reaction afterwards and it was obviously all about how he’s “British when he wins and Scottish when he loses”. Aside from that not being true (he’s both all the time) it makes sense to call him exclusively British when he wins.

It’s a bigger achievement.

Being a Scot who wins a tennis Grand Slam is huge, since we’re such a small country. Being the first Brit to do it in more than 70 years is bigger, since there’s around 70 million people in Britain and he’s the only one of them, let alone the millions who lived and died between Fred Perry and Murray, who managed it.

By way of comparison, if I was to tell someone about Celtic winning the European Cup, I would say they were the first British team to do it, not the first Scottish team. Not because Celtic are more British than Scottish (in fact the notion that they are British at all would be laughed at by most Scots), but because it’s more remarkable to be the first Brit to do it, than the first Scot, because the pool of talent is bigger. (As it happens Celtic were also the first team outside of Spain, Italy and Portugal to win it but there you go).

Murray’s national identity isn’t a debate. It’s barely worth talking about. And as far as I’m concerned, people in Buckinghamshire can be as proud of him as people in Bearsden.
